Aidan: Embodying Hardship and Triumph
Aidan (14) from Tanzania
Aidan (14) from Bushangaro, Karagwe district achieved this remarkable change through hard work and the support of our donors and CBIDO.
Pain and hardship
Aidan Edgar Selestin, a 14-year-old from Bushangaro in Karagwe district, Tanzania, embodies hardship and delights . Living with his mother after a challenging family situation, Aidan’s life took a dramatic turn when he was bitten by a snake while returning from School. The bite led to severe swelling in his legs, and despite receiving treatment at Bugando Hospital, Aidan eventually lost both of his legs. This tragic event forced Aidan to drop out of school and stay home, facing immense physical and emotional challenges.
Doors Open
Amidst this adversity, Aidan’s mother demonstrated extraordinary strength and dedication. After being expelled from their home due to a family conflict, she returned to her own family and began working on other people’s farms to earn money to support Aidan.
Aidan’s mother came into contact with our village rehabilitation worker thanks to CBIDO and donors Aidan received a tailored care he needed. He was also provided with wheel chair, enabling him to regain some mobility and independence.
Aidan Takes Giant Steps
Aidan’s educational journey resumed when he got the opportunity to study at the special school in Kitengule. Currently, Aidan is a class five pupil at Kitengule Primary School, demonstrating remarkable perseverance and academic progress. Beyond academics.
Thanks to CBIDO’s efforts in promoting inclusive sports in schools, Aidan found his passion for sports, especially tennis. Encouraged by this inclusive environment, Aidan is now in Dar es Salaam for training and evaluation. He aspires to qualify for the national team and proudly represent Tanzania in international competitions for athletes with disabilities. His journey is a testament to the power of inclusivity and determination in overcoming challenges and pursuing dreams.
Aidan’s mother reflects on their journey with a sense of awe and gratitude. Witnessing Aidan’s transformation and success feels like a miracle, especially considering the despair and superstitious beliefs about witchcraft that once surrounded his condition. The support from CBIDO has been instrumental in helping Aidan reach new heights.
The community and Aidan’s mother are profoundly thankful to CBIDO for their unwavering support and dedication. Despite the challenges he faced, Aidan’s journey continues to inspire and remind us all of the extraordinary strength within each individual.
